It is with great sadness that we mark the loss of Professor Sir John Hills who died on December 21st. John is best known for his extensive and sustained contribution to social policy research and scholarship, as Richard Titmuss Professor of Social Policy and Director of the Centre for the Analysis of Social Exclusion at the LSE. His many influential publications include the penetrating analysis of poverty and inequality in Good Times, Bad Times (2014). His work made a real difference, for example, as a member of the influential Turner Commission on pension reforms (2005) and later as chair of the Coalition government’s review of fuel poverty (2012). For those of us lucky enough to have served with him on RAE/REF Social Work and Social Policy panels, however, John will above all be remembered for his infinite kindness, good humour, warmth and generosity – those personal qualities, when all is said and done, that are always missed the most.
