Additional opportunities are now available to contribute to the delivery of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) through its assessment phase. We are inviting applications for experienced research professionals to join the panel secretariat to support the main and sub-panels. The REF team is seeking to appoint, on a secondment basis:

  • Up to six panel advisers, who will provide high level procedural guidance to a main panel and a group of sub-panels.

  • Up to thirteen panel secretaries, who will provide high-quality, dedicated secretariat support and procedural guidance to up to two sub-panels.

Successful applicants will be involved at the heart of the REF – a UK-wide exercise which assesses the quality of UK research and informs the distribution of public funds for research by the UK higher education funding bodies. Role-holders will join a group of experienced panel advisers and secretaries, and will gain experience of working with academics and experts in the use of research from across the HE sector and beyond, developing and honing a wide range of administrative, advisory and personal management skills. The roles offer excellent opportunities for anyone looking to develop their career in HE administration.

The roles will commence in full from April 2021 until March 2022, with a small number of preparatory training and meetings in advance of this period.

The panel secretariat will be recruited on a secondment basis from UK higher education institutions or organisations that have a substantial role in funding or assessing research in the UK. Panel secretary roles are available on a full and part-time basis; panel adviser roles are available on a part-time basis. We will reimburse the employing organisation up to a maximum of £65,000 per FTE per annum for panel secretaries from April 2021; a daily rate of up to £330 will apply until this date. For panel advisers a daily rate up to £380 applies. These figures are inclusive of salary and all related costs.
